All meetings are first Wednesdays at 7 pm in the multi-purpose room of the Museum of Natural History, 1801 Mountain Rd. NW.

Field Forums are hikes of 1-4 hours duration. Length depends on participants and the forum leader. Participants engage in sharing their botanical knowledge and identify plants by searching plant field guides.

Field Forums (except Placitas Open Space) begin at 9:00 a.m. at the assigned meeting place.

Invasive Plant Control Project in Bear Canyon area meets at 8:00 a.m.

Meeting places are described in detail at the end of the schedule.

Note: Three field trips (denoted by **) are subject to cancellation due to lack of precipitation. The 3 field trips are:

  • 1. Placitas- April 18
  • 2. Sumner Lake- April 24-26
  • 3. Red Dot Trail- May 16

People interested in attending should contact Don Heinze (see above) at least 3 days before the trip to see if it is going or not. Pray for rain!!!

For questions regarding field forums contact Jim McGrath (see above). Field trip and Field Forum participants should bring water, hat, sunscreen, snacks or lunch, rain gear and appropriate clothing to deal with poor weather conditions.

July 3- FRIDAY FIELD FORUM. Albuquerque Volcanoes. Gary Runyan (205-9953)/ George Miller, Leader. Meeting Place B.

July 10 thru 12- OVERNIGHT RARE PLANT FIELD TRIP. CLOUDCROFT / RUIDOSO AREA. Jim McGrath, Leader. Bring rain gear, food and otherwise prepare accordingly. Participants must sign up for this trip by contacting Jim McGrath (286-8745 or sedges@swcp.com) by June 30 in order to arrange car pooling and a rendezvous place at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning, July 11, in the Cloudcroft area. Prior to the trip we will schedule a UNM herbarium visit to examine rare plant species that we expect to see on the trip.

July 24- FRIDAY FIELD FORUM. Tecolote Peak. Jeanette Buffet, Leader. Meeting Place A.

July 25- FIELD TRIP. SAN GREGORIO LAKE EAST OF CUBA. Bill Dodson, Leader. Bring rain gear and other appropriate clothing as the elevation is 9500 feet. We listed more than 100 species last year at this time of year at this site. Meeting Place D to leave by 9:00 A.M.

August. No monthly meeting.

August 6-9- 2009 Annual meeting of the Native Plant Society of New Mexico, Kachina Lodge, Taos.

October 7- Meeting. PHOTO FORUM. Several participants will show slides or digital images of 5-10 min. each. The Forum allows participants to share photos they may not have previously shared with our group.

October 11- SUNDAY FIELD FORUM. Pino Canyon. Tom Stewart, Leader. Meeting Place C.

November 4- Meeting. Roadside Wildflowers of New Mexico. Forest Pathologist (U.S. Forest Service) and Parabotanist Dave Conklin takes us on a photographic journey to an unappreciated wildflower resource - our highway roadsides.

November 7- Invasive Plant Control Project. Frances Robertson and Nancy Hudson, Leaders. Meeting Place F.

December 5- Annual Holiday Potluck at Frances Robertson's house. 11:00 am- 2:00 pm.


Meeting Places

  • A. SE corner of Smith's parking lot at Tramway and Central.
  • B. NE corner of Wal-Mart parking lot located on east side of Coors about 0.25 miles north of I-40.
  • C. Albertson's parking lot at Tramway and Academy. Park along east wall.
  • D. Far North Shopping Center at San Mateo and Academy. Park by the mailboxes near Wienerschnitzel.
  • E. Placitas. Parking lot of grocery store in Homesteads Village Shopping Center. Directions to Placitas: I-25 north from ABQ to exit 242 (second exit at Bernalillo). Turn right and go east on Hwy 165 for approx. 5 miles to shopping center in Placitas on left. To car pool to Placitas, meet at D (Far North Shopping Center site).
  • F. Michial Emery Trailhead Parking Lot. Go east to the end of Spain Road (east of Tramway). At "T" intersection turn right and go 0.1 mile and turn left into parking lot.
  • G. Smith's parking lot at Carlisle and Menaul. SW corner behind Mattress Firm.
  • H. Los Lunas. SW corner of Home Depot parking lot by the toolsheds. From ABQ drive south on I-25 to Exit 203. Head east through 2 traffic lights. Home Depot is on left.
