Scheduled Events 2009
All programs and hikes are free and open to the public. Meetings are third Fridays at 7 pm at WNMU's
Harlan Hall, with refreshments following the program. Hikers meet at 8 am in south parking lot of WNMU
Fine Arts Theatre the morning of the hike to arrange carpooling. Participants must sign a release-of-liability
form at that time, and will receive a list of native plants in the hiking area For more information, call Deming
Gustafson, 575-388-5192. For hikes, bring water, food, hat, sunscreen, hiking shoes.
Friday, September 18, 7:00 p.m., Room 100 of Harlan Hall on the WNMU campus- Environmentalist George Farmer will talk about his land reclamation project at Axel Canyon Ranch in the Burros. George and Linda live off the grid and are working hard to restore the landscape and natural water flow, bring back the streams, grow their own food, and much more. The program is open to the public and free of charge. There will be refreshments following the meeting.
Field Trips
July 19- We will be going to the north side of Signal Peak. Early rains will guarantee a wealth of flora for this outing, which will be considered an easy hike.
August 16- We will visit Spring Canyon in the Florida Mountains south of Deming. A good monsoon should make this desert environment most interseting. The hike is rated as moderate.
September 20- We will be hiking Sheep Corral. This deep-woods riparian area is always good for an autumn "wild potato hunt" as well as a general observation of earlly fall in the woods. This, too, will be a moderate hike.
On the day of the hike, participants will meet at 8:00 a.m. in the south parking lot of the WNMU Fine Arts Theater, to sign release forms and pick up a copy of the list of native plants in the hike area. Hikers should bring lunch, plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, and good hiking shoes. Locale of the hikes may be subject to change. For further information, contact Deming Gustafson at 388-5192.
Special Events
Saturday, July 11- Plans are underway for the Gila Native Plant Society Garden Walk. Meet at 9 am in the south parking lot of the Performing Arts Theater on the WNMU campus. From there, we will visit three local gardens specializing in native plants.
Wednesday evenings, August 26, September 2, and September 9, 6 pm.- Fern Workshop, presented by Russ Kleinman, along with Bill Norris and Richard Felger. Short presentations followed by field trips will allow participants to identify common ferns found in our area. The workshops will begin in the biology lab at Harlan Hall on the WNMU campus. To enroll for the workshop, contact Keller Suberkropp at 575-313-1518, or keller65@signalpeak.net. There will be a nominal enrollment fee.
